D. Nurkse's previous books of poetry include Leaving Xaia, Voices Over Water, Staggered Lights, Shadow Wars, and Isolation in Action. He has received two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships, the Whiting Writers' Award, the 1998 Bess Hokin Prize from Poetry, and a New York State Foundation for the Arts fellowship. In 2000, he received an Artist's Fund grant from the New York State Foundation for the Arts, and a Tanne Foundation grant. In 1996, he was appointed Poet Laureate of Brooklyn. He has also written widely on human rights. |
